Understanding Ankle Sprains and How to Prevent It

It is no joke when you are in deep pain and can barely move your feet to walk. This can be due to a number of reasons and one of them could be Ankle Sprains. It occurs when the foot is suddenly moved sideways or twisted by accidents. This is very common among athletes like runners and basketball players. You’ll see players jump and landed on the wrong foot. But everyone can also experience this while doing daily activities all it takes is a missed step or running onto an uneven surface.

The usual symptoms of this type of injury aside form the pain are swelling and bruising. The ligaments in the ankle are stretched way too far that might cause it to be partially or fully torn. An X-Ray image of the affected area will show how much was the damage and the appropriate treatment. Sprains are classified in three different grades and each one has a varying symptom and treatment. If the pain persists after a few days and the swelling becomes worse, it is better to seek medical help or visit a Southfield podiatrist.

A grade 1 type of sprain is caused by stretched ligament and considered to be minor. Injury patients can walk even without crutches but are instructed not to perform activities such as running, jogging or jumping. The second level would have enhanced symptoms while the third grade is when ligaments are completely torn. It might take a while for a patient to resume to the normal activities as the recovery depends on the degree of damage.
